Mia

Our cat Mia died in October. She was 14 years old and had gotten quite thin and ill. The last few weeks, she spent most of her time curled up in cat beds and on towels. Mia always had a feisty personality. During the last few weeks of her life, Sloane and Soren were able to pet her and love her more than when she was frisky and young. We adopted Mia as a rescue from Rach’s dad’s clinic. Mia spent most of her young kitten time with Adam and me, so she was really attached to us. She loved to make biscuits in your lap. She also knew exactly how many pets she wanted and would let you know when your hand did that one extra stroke.

We had a little ceremony for her and buried her next to Murdoc. It happened to be the same day we planned a trip to Fort Stevens for a day trip with bike riding. Getting out of the house and moving our bodies helped to ease the sadness. Having no pets in our house was a big shift. Sloane started to ask for kittens right away, but waiting until after holiday travel seems the best idea.

Halloween

In early October, I got both kids to finalize their costumes. Sloane really struggled and I had to break it down into categories to refine the decision- animal, object, person. She threw object out immediately. And then she came up with a mash-up: princess-unicorn-kitty-dog-bunny.

On the other hand, Soren knew he wanted to be a caterpillar. I thought I could make a puffy green costume. But Soren had a particular caterpillar in mind from a strange insect book- the puss moth caterpillar. I found some base layers and then bought some fabric to add on. He had more opinions this year on the construction than last year. But he had some constructive input with the hood part. I think it came out well and he was happy.

Carving pumpkins was really fun! Soren and Sloane both got the hang of using the little saws for carving and were creative with their designs. But they still aren’t fans of the cleaning out part.

Our neighbor arranged a costume parade again this year on the weekend before Halloween. It was dry and fun to see the neighborhood kids all dressed up. On Halloween, it was SO rainy and soggy. The kids enjoyed trick or treating but didn’t have the stamina they did last year when it was dry. Soren wouldn’t even go to the last two houses because he was so wet. The kids did enjoy handing out candy for a hour when we got home. Sloane would grab the bowl of candy and Soren would shine his light in the bowl so people could see the candy options.
